NEW GRAD RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Choosing where to begin your nursing career is one of the most significant decisions you will make. At Tucson Medical Center (TMC), we believe that the ideal foundation for a lifetime of clinical excellence isn't just about the hands-on experience you gain—it’s about the quality of the ecosystem supporting you along the way. We intentionally differentiate our nursing careers by surrounding our new graduates with an unparalleled network of professional and emotional support.

The leap from the classroom to the bedside can feel overwhelming, but you won't have to navigate it alone. Our New Graduate Nurse Residency Program is accredited with distinction by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP), and is specifically engineered to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world clinical practice. By providing a structured, predictable, and highly collaborative environment, we focus heavily on minimizing the transitional stress that often accompanies a nurse's first year, allowing you to maximize your clinical confidence, find your voice, and truly thrive as a Registered Nurse.

To ensure you are never rushed and always prepared, our New Graduate Nurse Residency Program is strategically divided into three distinct, progressive phases. Each phase is thoughtfully geared toward eliminating burnout and building a rock-solid foundation for your future. You'll start with a hospital orientation which is your introduction to the heart, culture, history, and overarching systems of TMC. Next, you'll dive into your clinical orientation. In this phase, you'll experience tailored, hands-on clinical immersion on your specific unit utilizing advanced learning models. Then you'll wrap up with your residency, a year-long professional development journey packed with peer support, expert seminars, and wellness coaching.

Hospital Orientation

Kick off your career during your very first week with Hospital Orientation. We’ll introduce you to the rich history of TMC, what makes our culture unique, and how our nursing teams deliver exceptional care. Beyond the basics, you will engage in hands-on skills labs, complete essential computer-based training, and sit down for an exclusive onboarding session with the Residency Coordinator to map out your path forward.

Clinical Orientation

Clinical Orientation focuses on your precepted, hands-on clinical time. TMC utilizes the Tiered Skills Acquisition Model (TSAM®), a structured, individualized framework that builds nursing knowledge and confidence by gradually progressing from basic to complex patient care concepts. You will work alongside a preceptor trained in adult learning principles, ensuring a seamless transition from novice to competent professional. Additionally, you will complete a series of specialized, unit-specific classes tailored to the exact needs of your patient population.

Residency

Directed by our Nurse Residency Coordinator, the 12-Month Residency bridges classroom learning and real-world practice. Monthly seminars feature subject matter experts covering transition concepts, interactive wellness activities, and peer-led small group discussions. As part of your professional development, you will complete an Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Project to implement positive change on your unit, fully backed by the TMC leadership team. Recognizing that the transition to professional nursing can be challenging, we prioritize your mental and emotional well-being. Our program integrates dedicated Nurse Coaches who provide both group support and individual, 1:1 appointments to help you navigate your first year with confidence.
