Benson Hospital Position Description

Job Title: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Department: Respiratory Therapy

Reports To: Director of Respiratory Therapy

POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision the RRT will perform all respiratory care related

duties. Sets up and administers all routine and complex respiratory therapy

procedures and protocols to patients of all ages in all areas of the hospital,

particularly in the Emergency Room as prescribed by a physician. Responsible for

the application and operation of acute care ventilators used for continuous short

term mechanical ventilation of adults, pediatrics, and neonates. Therapists are

expected to be self-directed in the absence of the full-time manager, maintain all

department records, hospital records, and enters accurate information into the

hospital Electronic Health Records (EHR) for the therapy as given.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Direct patient care related to respiratory care, diagnostic and therapeutic

procedures and protocols.

2. Respiratory and therapeutic clinical evaluation of the patient.

3. Oxygen Therapy; tank, tent, mask, cannula, walker, high flow, etc.

4. Coughing and deep breathing instruction and exercises and related maneuvers

including Incentive Spirometry

5. Aerosol Therapy, MDI, DPI’s, and Sputum Induction

6. Bedside and outpatient Pulmonary Function Testing

7. Chest Physical Therapy

8. CPAP, and BiPAP Therapy

9. Airway maintenance, oral, nasal, and tracheal suctioning

10. Arterial puncture for the purpose of blood gas analysis, and daily maintenance of

the OPTI-CCA blood gas machine

11. Non-invasive monitoring including overnight pulse oximetry and sleep studies

12. Continuous mechanical ventilation of acute and critically ill patient in Emergency

Room

13. All other procedures as described in the P&P manual

14. Documentation of patient care on the hospital EHR.

15. Active participant of the Respiratory Therapy Department Team.

16. Ability to exercise good judgment, make sound decisions.

17. Professional, alert, calm, courteous in stressful situations.

18. Additional duties as requested within the scope of the Respiratory Department.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

1. Graduate of a Committee on Accreditation of Respiratory Care (CoARC)

approved program of Respiratory Care (Associate’s Degree).

2. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the National Board of Respiratory

Care (NBRC), Bachelor’s degree preferred.

3. Must have current license to practice in the State of Arizona.

4. Six months of post-graduate experience preferred, but new graduates are

encouraged to apply with references from their respected schools or other

working Respiratory Therapists.

5. Must be currently certified for basic life support and ACLS. PALS certification

required within a year after hire. Preferred additional certifications include but not

limited to STABLE and NRP.

6. Must have effective communication, computer, and organizational skills.
