The Main OR has 14 Operating Rooms that include:  2 Endovascular rooms, 2 Open Heart rooms, 1 Cysto room, 1 da Vinci Robot room, and 1 Pediatric room.  Services include: General Surgery (Adult and Peds), ENT (Adult and Peds), Urology (Adult and Peds), Vascular, Thoracic, Heart, Neuro, Podiatry, Ophthalmology, and Oral Surgery.  The Operating Room is staffed 24/7.  Pre-Op Holding (POH) is staffed Monday through Friday from 0530-1930 and on-call Saturday and Sunday 0645-1500.  PACU is staffed 24/7 with call to accommodate surgeries.

SUMMARY:
Coordinates and supervises activities of nursing personnel and surgical cases for cardiac services. Coordinates CNL role within the Operating Room, serving as primary leader, in conjunction with the Peri-operative nurse director. Assigns duties to professional and ancillary staff in accordance with patient needs.  Oversees maintenance of clinical records and compiles reports on medical services rendered.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assists with unit needs assessment of equipment, environment, new technology, for the development of capital budgeting in conjunction with the unit manager for cardiac service line.

Consults and communicates with cardiac surgeons to ensure proper care and follow-up of patients and prepares, plans, coordinates and oversees all aspects of intraoperative care for the cardiac service.

Establishes priorities in the care of patients entering the surgical suite, and coordinates care between other professional caregivers as needed in the perioperative area.

Identifies patients at high risk requiring advanced nursing judgment; utilizes holistic assessment, identifies relative aspects of situations and determines the appropriate course of action to move patient/family, and staff toward expected outcomes.

Provides, manages, and coordinates care; applies analytical reasoning, rational problem-solving skills, using evidenced-based information and clinical judgment; acts as a clinical resource to staff members and others.

Maintains knowledge of standards of care, job performance, and hospital/department policies and procedures demonstrated through leadership of self and staff.

Assists in the orientation of new personnel demonstrated in skills list assessment completion, incidental and planned education of staff.

On request, prepares reports to assist management in evaluating performance and making recommendations.

Adheres to TMC organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies and standards.

Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:  Bachelor's degree in Nursing.

EXPERIENCE:  Four (4) years nursing experience in OR.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: Current RN license permitting work in the state of Arizona, CPR (basic life support), and preferred is a Certified Perioperative Practice (CNOR).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of critical care techniques, tools, and responses required to ensure optimal patient care.

  • Knowledge of processes and procedures to follow during a rapid response, code, or stroke call.

  • Knowledge of surgery specialties and how to prepare, assess, and provide post-operative patient care to assure best practices are followed.

  • Skill in evaluating performance and recommend improvement of self and others.

  • Skill in developing training materials and educating staff in the proper responses for critical care issues.

  • Skill in the use and maintenance of computer systems and programs, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Outlook, and One Chart.

  • Skill in communicating with staff and physicians involved in critical care to ensure the proper care of patients.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to listen and accurately interpret others’ communication or instructions to take appropriate action.

  • Ability to speak and communicate effectively.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
