SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Point of Care Coordinator and in collaboration with the Laboratory Management team, oversees all point of care testing, monitoring and maintaining all point of care instrument/equipment to ensure continuous compliance standards throughout the hospital meet all regulatory requirements, to assure customer satisfaction, and to provide excellent patient care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Responsible for assisting with policies, procedures, staff training and competency review.  Assists the Point of Care Coordinator, Clinical Educators; and Unit Managers in overseeing POC program. Visits, observes and monitors out-patient and in-patient areas where POC testing occurs.

Logs specimens into laboratory and Laboratory Information System (LIS); receives specimens and labels them appropriately

Assists in ensuring POC testing is performed to the manufacturer’s instructions for use and ensures all regulatory requirements and standards are met (e.g.,  Joint Commission, College of American Pathologists, CLIA and other relevant organizations).

Processes requisitions for Point of Care laboratory services.

Serves as liaison to the organization and provides and communicates current regulatory guidelines, legislative changes and accreditation criteria, in collaboration of the Point of Care Coordinator, laboratory management team, Clinical Educators and Unit Managers.

With Point of Care Coordinator, laboratory management team and Clinical Educators assists in coordinating and ensuring initial education and continued POC tests certification for staff. Assists in ensuring user access is maintained.

Serves as a resource to laboratory and hospital staff in matters relating to Point of Care.

Operates, maintains and troubleshoots instrumentation and equipment, correcting malfunctions.

Supports staff in completion of projects and performs assigned duties in absence of supervisor/manager.

Participates in the development and implementation of new laboratory POC instruments, procedures and techniques.

Keys and verifies computer input data, assigns identification numbers, and produces specimen collection lists/labels and other computer reports.

Assists with internal and external inspections for Point of Care testing and findings including all follow-up activities and responses.

Uses lab computer system to enter and retrieve pertinent patient information.

Initiates corrective action as soon as deficiencies are identified. Works collaboratively with the Point of Care Coordinator, Laboratory Management team, Clinical Educators and Unit Managers in effort to resolve issues and complaints in a prompt and timely manner.

Adheres to and supports team members in exhibiting TMCH values of integrity, community, compassion, and dedication. 

Answers telephones, routes callers, takes messages and provides information to callers.

Participates in the Laboratory quality control, safety, and preventive maintenance programs.

Adheres to TMCH organizational and department-specific safety and confidentiality policies and standards.

Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:  High school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

EXPERIENCE:  Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a Clinical Laboratory.  Experience in clinical laboratory operations and in point of care testing desirable. Supervisory and staff training experience preferred.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: None Required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of how to prepare lab specimens to ensure quality control.

  • Skill in performing simple lab tests and recording results.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to listen and accurately interpret others’ communication or instructions to take appropriate action.

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

  • Ability to calculate figures and compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs and apply basic algebraic concepts.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

  • Ability to solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
