Northern Cochise Community Hospital Position Description

 

JOB TITLE: Phlebotomist/ Lab Clerk

 

REPORTS TO:   Laboratory Manager

 

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Provides overall assistance in the Laboratory Department by fulfilling various duties such as phlebotomy, specimen collection and processing, and drug screen collection.  Performs phlebotomy functions and non-technical duties in areas including the hospital laboratory, outpatient, and off-site services.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs phlebotomy according to established procedures, and gives urine and stool specimen collection instructions to patients.

  • Obtains blood samples by skin puncture, venipuncture, and collects urine samples, throat, and nose cultures.

  • Performs special tests such as bleeding time and glucose tolerance, andnewborns screens collections for genetic testing

  • Collects samples for DNA testing, checks donor picture identification and obtain photographs and fingerprints.

  • Follows all organizational and department of unit policies and procedures

    Interacts directly with patients and organizes patient records to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation

  • Greets and checks-in patients, answers telephones, faxes results, and processes paperwork

  • Instructs patients in proper collection methods

  • Maintains alphabetical filing systems for patient information, receives results sent from reference laboratory, and distributes reports to physicians

    Prepares and processes specimens

  • Labels specimens for identification and logs them in daily accession logbook

  • Prepares specimens for reference laboratory

  • Sends specimens to laboratory for analysis and completes paperwork

 

Secondary Functions:

Keeps laboratory clean and orderly, stocks work area as needed, maintains inventories and requisitions supplies.

Attends department and other training/educational meetings.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
 

High school diploma or equivalent. 6-12 months phlebotomy experience or phlebotomy certification.  Or a combination of training, education, and experience

 

CERTIFICATES/LICENSE/REGISTRATIONS 
Phlebotomy certification preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS/ ABILITIES 

  • Knowledge of venipuncture techniques and universal blood and body fluid precautions.

  • Skill in phlebotomy techniques with adults, pediatrics, and geriatrics.Computer/data entry skills.

  • Ability to maintain a professional, positive and courteous attitude with patients, families and staff even under stressful situations.Must be willing to have a flexible schedule, and work nights and weekends when necessary.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and anticoagulants
