Benson Hospital Position Description

Job Title: Laboratory Assistant Department: Laboratory

Reports To: Laboratory Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY

Performs phlebotomy to obtain specimens for use in testing procedures performed

in this and all reference laboratories used by this laboratory. Demonstrates a

commitment to the mission of Benson Hospital in serving

its patients. Assists Tech’s with various duties outlined below.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Assures results given by phone are accurate with respect to patient identification

and date/time of service

2. Accurately prepares and delivers all laboratory reports to proper locations

3. Gives copies of all positive cultures, hepatitis, and potential infectious disease

results to infection control

4. Accurately prepares send out specimens, assuring that specimens are properly

aliquated, labeled and packaged for shipment to proper lab

5. Follows all safety procedures for handling an discarding bio-hazardous

materials

6. Maintains an orderly and clean work area

7. Assures that all clerical duties are up to date and filed correctly

8. Assures that send out tests results are received in a timely fashion, and follows

through to see that these results are available to the proper personnel

9. Restocks work areas with the proper rotation of supplies, checking for outdates

and maintaining a continuous inventory by reporting low supplies to proper

ordering personnel

10. Proficient in the proper collection of throat swabs for culture of Rapid Strep

procedures

11. Performs chemical portion of urinalysis

12. Proficient and consistent in performing the daily maintenance procedures of the

Clinitek analyzer

13. Centrifuges, separates, and delivers specimens to the proper work station

14. Run CBC’s under the direction of the tech on duty

15. Runs QC samples on the cell dyne under the direction of the tech on duty

16. Prepares smears for differentials and reticulocyte counts

17. Sets up SED rates

18. Checks temperatures on all refrigerators, heating blocks and incubators and logs

those findings daily in the LIS

19. Accurately and completely documents the date and time of collection for each

specimen collected and initials all collections done

20. Accurately enters patient demographics into the computer LIS, assuring accurate

collection times and ordering physician along with any needed data to assure

that results reach the proper physician in a timely fashion.

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Accurately identifies patients prior to collection of specimens

· Accurately labels all specimens

· Familiar with the testing requirements and specimen collection requirement

manuals to adequately draw correct samples and volume for testing, and to see

that these samples are handled using proper standards in pre-testing phase.

COMMUNCATION

· Communications, cooperation, and assistance are given promptly and in a

courteous manner to coworkers, hospital staff and patients at all times

· At all time maintains a professional public image and attitude towards visitors,

patients, and coworkers

· Promotes an immediate positive impression with patients

· Consistent and conscious of patients rights and privacy

· Attends hospital and laboratory meetings and in-services

· Maintains knowledge and expertise through review of literature and continuing

education

· Accumulates CEU credits as required by an accredited agency

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

1. Certified in phlebotomy or POL, able to perform phlebotomy on patients of all

ages.

2. Excellent organizational skills.

3. Able to work well under stressful conditions and possess excellent human

relations’ skills.
