SUMMARY:

Under the direction of a Pharmacist assists in processing and compounding prescriptions and other drug orders. Pulls prescribed medication from shelf, enters medication charges into the computer, restocks pharmacy automation, and handles telephone inquiries.  Completion of Pharmacy Technician Level II proficiencies.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assists pharmacists as directed, including filling orders and preparing labels.

Complies with federal and state statutes, rules and regulations regarding the practice of pharmacy.

Prepares and makes deliveries to patient care areas and ancillary units.

Processes patient charges for pharmaceuticals as required.

Replenishes medicine supply carts/automated dispensing units for nursing units; ensures that the pharmacy is stocked with essential drugs and pharmaceuticals.

Compounds, labels and packages pharmaceuticals.

Counts, packages and labels unit doses and fills routine orders for inspection by Pharmacists.

Uses aseptic admixture technique in the horizontal or vertical laminar airflow hood as appropriate.

Enters or retrieves data from established computer files.

Adheres to TMC organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values policies and standards.

Performs related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:  High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of hospital pharmacy technician experience, preferably in an acute care setting.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:  Due to insurance company requirements, incumbent must be 21 years of age or older, due to incremental use of a company car.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: Valid Arizona driver’s license.   Licensed by the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician required.  Heartsaver CPR (HSCPR or HSFACPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. .

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical practices and procedures and regulations involving the administering of medications.

  • Knowledge of medicine terminology.

  • Skill in compounding and processing prescriptions.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to listen and accurately interpret others’ communication or instructions to take appropriate action; ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

  • Ability to calculate figures and compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Ability to apply basic algebraic concepts

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
