Job Description
SUMMARY:
Performs clinical laboratory tests and procedures to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Processes specimens and performs testing under the guidance of a medical technologist.
Meets expected turnaround time for test results.
Recognizes abnormal or unusual test results and determines course of action following predetermined criteria prior to reporting results; if necessary, confers with a medical technologist, supervisor or pathologist before reporting results.
Performs, records, and evaluates quality control results and implements corrective action as appropriate.
Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots instrumentation and other equipment, correcting basic malfunctions.
Documents and communicates technical and general information to appropriate individuals.
Ensures that adequate supplies and reagents are available to perform the testing required.
Trains other personnel in policies, procedures and protocols pertaining to their job duties; provides documentation as necessary.
Communicates and interfaces with hospital personnel, patients, medical staff and family members to ensure high quality patient care.
Assists supervisor with scheduling.
Acts as a trainer for new employees in their department.
Assists supervisor in preparing for CAP inspections.
Maintains accuracy of equipment and reagents by performing established preventive maintenance procedures.
Reviews technical procedures in use and modifies, researches, and implements new and/or revised procedures or equipment for the sections in consultation with management and pathology staff.
Ensures that policies/procedures conform to requirements of accrediting agencies.
Regularly assigns, instructs, and checks the work of assigned staff; provide input to the supervisor and/or manager on employee performance.
Assists with solving daily issues, such as equipment problems and staff assignments.
Adheres to TMC organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies, and standards.
Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Associate’s degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school. Bachelors of Science degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of related experience, preferably in an acute care setting.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: Registered or registry eligible for MLT by ASCP, HEW, or AMT.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
· Knowledge of clinical laboratory protocols to follow to ensure tests and procedures are accurate.
· Skill in performing lab analyses and recognizing abnormal or unusual test results, then determining proper course of action.
· Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
· Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.
· Ability to listen and accurately interpret others’ communication or instructions to take appropriate action.
· Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
· Ability to calculate figures and compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw, interpret bar graphs, and apply basic algebraic concepts.
· Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
· Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
