JOB TITLE: MEDICAL RECORDS CODER (REMOTE IN STATE OF ARIZONA)

 

REPORTS TO:  HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT (HIM) MANAGER

 

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Summary:

Codes hospital records for the purpose of reimbursement, compliance with all regulations according to diagnosis, and procedures performed using appropriate and supported ICD-10 and CPT and HCPC classifications.
 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

Responsible for medical record coding.

  • Performs procedural and diagnostic coding for outpatient services, and emergency room services

  • Communicates with the Director about documentation and levels.

  • Alerts Director to issues identified as well as researches possible answers for Director’s approval.

  • Codes inpatient admission records as assigned.

  • Reviews for required documentation to reflect payer, government and state requirements and updates accounts when necessary.

  • Reviews for compliance with documentation.

  • Reviews units assigned to charges and pends modifiers according to rules.

  • Reviews Medical necessity edits for corrections.

     

    Secondary functions:

  • Attends or participates in Departmental meetings.

  • Assists with the coding corrections necessary during audits and state reviews.

  • Other duties as assigned.

     

     

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

     

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Two years of experience in a medical records setting preferred.Experience in working with computers.Hospital coding experience preferred.

 


CERTIFICATES/LICENSE/REGISTRATIONS 


Certified Professional Coder.  Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Medical Coding Certification  - Hospital – strongly preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS/ ABILITIES 
 

  • Demonstrated ability to self-motivate and work independently with limited supervision.

  • Strong customer service skills along with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, clinical disease processes, and pharmacology preferred.

  • Demonstrated computer literacy and coding ability, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.

  • Maintain high level of confidentiality.
