Directly manages employees who are supporting the delivery of surgical care in the preoperative environment, guided by our preoperative mission and values.  These include OR Assistants, Anesthesia Technicians and Equipment Technicians.  Interfaces with and provides oversight to environmental services and transporter staff assigned to the surgical services suites.


Defines, establishes and coordinates work processes and staffed coverage that optimizes:

  • clinical care provided by the OR nurse, CST, surgeons and anesthesiologists in the pre, intra and post-operative period.  Examples include the procurement and preparation of required equipment, tables and beds; patient positioning; specimen processing; retrieval of supplies & instrumentations; transportation of patients to/from; etc.

  • operational efficiency, with particular emphasis on turnaround time.  Examples include the development/clarification of work duties, assignment/supervision of staff, monitoring outcomes, etc.

Creates, posts and maintains staff schedules for both on-site and on-call hours.  Works with business manager to ensure accurate position control

Interviews, hires and trains staff; provides continuous feedback and evaluates employee performance; appropriately handles performance issues; delegates work assignments for the greatest amount of efficiency and productivity.

Demonstrates and upholds established standards of behavior, safety, and confidentiality, as well as TMCH and department policies and standards. 

Adheres to and supports staff in exhibiting TMCH values of integrity, community, compassion, and dedication. 

Assists in creating and managing cost center budget, monitors performance on a monthly basis, analyzes variances and takes appropriate action.

Supports and participates in the continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of services provided.

Acts as liaison to maintain excellent rapport with surgical staff and surgeons.

Exhibits excellence in customer service through appropriate attitude and interaction with all patients, visitors and staff.

Demonstrates a positive role model in all behaviors, attitude and work performances.

Facilitates development of unit specific standards of care with realistic and measurable patient care outcomes.

Analyzes daily operations and implements needed changes.

Develops departmental goals and objectives in coordination with director.

Coordinates planning, scheduling, and implementation of activities to accomplish work in cooperation with other sections of department and/or other hospital departments and services.

Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory requirements as well as organizational and department-specific safety standards and guidelines.

Maintains required records, reports, and statistics as directed.

Assists with departmental purchasing of equipment.

Maintains confidentiality and protects sensitive data at all times, including personnel information, proprietary information, and patient information.

Adheres to and supports team members in exhibiting TMCH values of integrity, community, compassion, and dedication. 

Adheres to TMCH organizational and department-specific safety and confidentiality policies and standards.

Performs related duties as assigned.


EDUCATION:  Associate’s degree in health care related field; bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of related experience, two (2) of those years in a supervisory capacity, preferably in a healthcare setting



  • Knowledge of managing and leading staff.

  • Knowledge of the surgical environment of care

  • Skill in applying creativity to related area and managing functions for efficiency.

  • Skill in training, guiding and evaluating staff and making recommendations for improvements.

  • Demonstrates effective IT skills and familiarity, such as basic functionality of the computer, PC File and Folder, Word, Excel, e-mail and attachment capabilities, Outlook, PowerPoint and presentation skills.

  • Ability to complete routine maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Ability to listen and accurately interpret others' communication or instructions to take appropriate action.

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

  • Ability to effectively and appropriately present information and respond to inquiries or complaints from staff through executive management
