Implements and maintains all environmental, occupational safety and health, and fire prevention programs.  Collects and analyzes data regarding deficiencies and opportunities for the improvement of compliance with various regulatory agencies.  Stops and corrects unsafe practices. Oversees the daily operations of the Safety Department; manages staff and ensures compliance with standards and regulations.



Consults with administrative staff on all matters concerning safety and maintains liaisons with other institutions’ safety personnel and appropriate regulatory agencies.

Exhibits excellence in customer service through appropriate attitude and interaction with visitors and staff.

Supports quality improvement initiatives through team participation, data collection, process change implementations and other activities.

Follows applicable local, state and federal security regulations and restrictions and to formulate and implement the organization’s safety program; ensures the compliance with all regulatory agencies in regards to safety.

Effectively manages staff; interviews, hires and trains; evaluates employee performance; deals with performance problems as appropriate; delegates work assignments effectively.

Assists in managing department budget.

Creates and maintains databases.

Uses managerial and statistical tools to generate, organize and analyze data to effectively make appropriate changes to systems.

Develops clear goals for the safety program and an action plan for meeting goals.

Develops and implements policies and procedures in accordance with JCAHO, LSC, UFC and NFPA.

Develops and implements safe, standardized and correct procedures for the proper storage, labeling and handling of hazardous waste materials in accordance with RCRA, DOT, ADOSH and EPA requirements.

Develops and implements policies and procedures governing fire protection and life safety in accordance with JCAHO, LSC, UFC and NFPA.

Provides guidance and assistance in the planning stages of construction projects to ensure dust and contaminants so not enter patient care units.

Develops, maintains and implements an asbestos program in accordance with NESHAP, AHERA and OSHA requirements.

Anticipates, recognizes, evaluates and controls workplace conditions that may cause workers’ injury or illness.

Uses, calibrates, and interprets data from environmental and compliance monitoring equipment.

Measures and identifies exposures, problem tasks, and risks to include all jobs, operations and work activities; applies controls and or solutions to problem areas, problem tasks and risks to include all jobs, operations and work activities.

Inspects, researches, and analyzes how the particular chemicals or physical hazards at the worksite affect worker health.

Applies engineering controls to minimize employee exposure by either reducing or removing the hazard at the source or isolating the worker from the hazards.

Reads, understands and interprets OSHA, EPA and JCAHO standards and applies them in the management of a formal Safety Program.

Adheres to TMC organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies and standards.

Performs related duties as assigned.



 EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s Degree.

 EXPERIENCE:  Four (4) years of safety management experience.


40 hour HAZWOPER                                                                                    

8 hour Hazardous Waste (RCRA)

  • Knowledge of all environmental, occupational safety and health, and fire prevention best practices.
  • Knowledge of environmental, safety and fire federal and state regulations.
  • Skill in developing and implementing safety programs and policies.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals; ability to respond to sensitive and/or confidential inquiries or complaints from regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, single or multiple regressions, determination of test reliability and validity, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Knowledge of managing and leading staff.
  • Skill in applying creativity to related area and managing functions for efficiency.
  • Skill in training, guiding and evaluating staff and making recommendations for improvements.
  • Demonstrates effective IT skills and familiarity, such as basic functionality of the computer, PC File and Folder, Word, Excel, e-mail and attachment capabilities, Outlook, PowerPoint and presentation skills.
