Laboratory Specimen Processor
Job Description
SUMMARY:
Specimen processors are primarily responsible for processing laboratory samples from patients as they come into the clinical lab. This includes checking a specimen's information for accuracy, entering specimen information into the computer, and ensuring the right department receives the specimen and information. Specimen processors most commonly work with blood, body samples (urine, stool, sputum, tissue, body parts, etc.), and fluid.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Receives and opens specimen bags
Enters specimen information, patient demographics, and tests codes into computer system
Prepares specimens for laboratory testing and analysis
Ensures specimens and requisitions are correctly labeled
Validates requisitions against specimens before entering or scanning into the system
Delivers specimens to different parts of the lab as needed
Labels, numbers specimens, and prepares aliquots
Centrifuges specimens and disposes of specimens
Prepares specimens to be sent to a reference laboratory
Assists clients and phlebotomists with inquiries pertaining to specimen requirements and tests turnaround times
Sets up, calibrates, cleans, and performs routine maintenance on laboratory centrifuges
Operates a personal computer, calculator, FAX machine, copy machine or related office machinery in performing assigned duties
Resolves routine problems related to specimen collection and specimen processing
Consults reference manuals to ensure specimens are properly packaged for send out.
Coordinates the dispatch log and courier requests for specimens being sent to outside laboratories.
Receives, documents, and releases expired patients to and from our morgue
Assists in training new personnel in accordance with laboratory department policies and procedures.
Requests and orders supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times.
Cleans and maintains laboratory and all equipment
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
EXPERIENCE: None. Healthcare related experience is preferred.
