SUMMARY:

Provides genetic counseling to patients and their families. Collaborates with the other health team members to provide comprehensive care in care team setting. Interviews patients and relatives to obtain history relevant to patient's medical problems and assesses healthcare needs.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Work with patients and families with compassion, to provide genetic counseling and understandable education to support patients in making impactful decisions. Primary focus is on prenatal genetics as well as gynecology cancer testing.

Knowledge of local and national resources to assist families.

Pretest and posttest counseling for Maternal-fetal, OB and Gyn genetic testing.

Manage Genetic Lab testing results to include:  Review genetic lab, amniocentesis and CVS results. Identify abnormal results, initiate patient contact with results, and facilitate patient care follow up Consult with MFM physician, complete E.H.R. documentation for all patient encounters in person and via phone.  

Provide support for MFM physicians, OBs, CNMs, NPs, regarding tests offered, work flow, including sample tracking and test code verification. Provide support for sonographers with education and consultation regarding potential ultrasound markers for potential genetic syndromes. Assist to support medical necessity for health plan coverage of testing. Support the department education with regular educational updates and staff trainings for ordering and documentation.

Work directly with vendors to maintain best practices and facilitate services for affordable testing options and equal access to genetic testing for all patients.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:  Master’s prepared in Genetics or Genetic counseling and board eligible or board certified as a Genetic Counselor by American Board of Genetic Counseling and/or American Board of Medical Genetics.

EXPERIENCE:  Two (2) years of genetic counseling experience, preferably in an acute care setting.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION:  Board certified as a Genetic Counselor. Valid AZ fingerprint clearance card may be required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Experience with and critical of laboratories providing diagnostic services such as chromosome analysis, molecular DNA technology, and biochemical screening

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills

  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment
