Benson Hospital Position Description

Job Title: Family Nurse Practitioner Department(s): Nursing Administration

Reports To: Chief Clinical Officer

POSITION SUMMARY

The position is responsible in providing quality patient care in utilizing quality expertise in

diagnosis and treatment to prevent, remediate, or alleviate illness and promote health, thus,

resulting in improved patient outcomes. Consultation and collaboration are essential skills

for FNPs as they are for all members of the healthcare team. The position utilizes an

interdisciplinary team approach to assure the highest standards of quality care.

RESPONSIBILITY

1. To deliver a high standard of patient care as a Nurse Practitioner in general

practice, using advanced autonomous clinical skills, and a broad and indepth

theoretical knowledge base.

2. Provide a first point of contact within the Practice for patients presenting with

undifferentiated, undiagnosed problems, making use of skills in history taking,

physical examination, problem-solving and clinical decision-making, to

establish a diagnosis and management plan.

3. Instigate necessary invasive and non-invasive diagnostic tests or

investigations and interpret findings/reports.

4. Prescribe safe, effective and appropriate medication as defined by current

legislative framework.

5. To prioritize health problems and intervene appropriately, including initiation of

effective emergency care.

6. Promote health and well-being through the use of health promotion,

health education, screening and therapeutic communication skills

7. To clearly communicate the health status of the patient using

appropriate terminology, technology and format.

8. Provide safe, evidence-based, cost-effective, individualized patient care.

9. To work within the practice guidelines, policies and procedures of

Benson Hospital.

10. To maintain accurate and contemporaneous records, utilizing computer

systems where appropriate.

11. Develops and implements departmental policies and procedures to

ensure compliance with Benson Hospital policies and procedures.

12. Oversees and maintains department files and records in accordance with hospital

policies and procedures.

13. Oversees delivery of appropriate services and monitors utilization and

changes within the department.

14. Prepares, maintains, and tracks departmental budget including oversight of

the inventory system.

15. Responsible for compliance with all accreditation and regulatory standards

as appropriate.

16. Exhibits strong leadership, clinical and managerial skills and is a positive

role model.

17. Communicates inter and intra-departmentally and promotes a team environment.

18. Serves as a technical consultant for medical and nursing staff.

19. Ensures appropriate equipment is available and maintained.

ORGANIZATIONAL

1. To complete records, audits, reports and respond to appropriate questions

and requests.

2. To attend meetings as requested.

3. Support effective communications channels between the whole team

4. To keep the Chief Clinical Officer informed about pressures and difficulties

or problem areas when aware.

5. Ensure that orders for supplies are within a reasonable budget and one

is constantly seeking to reduce costs to the department.

6. To contribute to practice strategy and developments when requested.

7. Understand that common patient complaints may also be the catalyst for

change within practice procedures.

8. To understand the role of the Risk Management Team within the practice

contributing to risk assessment and Significant Event Audit and the importance of

Infection Control.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

1. A masters or doctorate prepared as a Nurse Practitioner (NP).

2. The Nurse Practitioner must have possession of a valid Arizona license as an

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, and be certified/credentialed as a Nurse

Practitioner by an approved certifying body.

3. A current, or be eligible for, a DEA license by the state of Arizona prescribing

guidelines.

4. BLS Certified and ACLS Certified
