SUMMARY:

Leads a team that assesses, plans, implements and evaluates information system support needs for patient care operations according to own clinical judgment, policies, procedures, protocol and standards.  The clinical informatics team lead is responsible for system assessments; process analysis, identifying and implementing information system solutions that support more efficient and effective work performance based on inherit knowledge of clinical function and processes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Collaborates closely with and communicates between IS leadership and clinical operations to provide leadership for clinical systems projects and initiatives.

Assists in the development of policies and procedures for the usage of clinical information systems.

Leads the clinical informatics team with the implementation and support of information systems that support clinical practice and bring new programs for the improvement of clinical care.

Has strong desire to enhance clinical practice with technology utilizing re-engineering processes and knowledge of change theory.

Uses workflow process modeling to assess the need for and/or use of information systems to support and enhance clinical practice.

Guides the selection of informational technologies that utilize patient data to support clinical decision-making by collaborating with clinical leadership, information systems leadership, and staff.

Serves as a resource for clinical staff regarding clinical information systems.

Works with clinical leaders to ensure they provide us with the best Super Users and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to support our clinical information systems.

Leads the effort to measure and evaluate the outcomes of clinical information systems.

Discovers and defines the need for new clinical information systems.

Leads the development of specifications that will support the design and successful implementation of clinical information systems.

Makes informed recommendations that will guide purchasing decisions for new clinical information systems and technologies that meet organizational standards.

Supports workflow and clinical process changes to ensure the success and optimization of new or modified clinical information systems.

Ensures that new or modified clinical information systems maintain patient confidentiality and privacy, in accordance with HIPAA, TJC, and other regulatory agencies.

Collaborates with the training lead in curriculum development and the education of clinical users on features and usage of clinical information systems.

Ensures the clinical information systems capture discrete data to support reporting requirements. 

Develops and implements auditing and review processes to ensure project goals and objectives are met.

Delivers regular reports that clearly communicate the results and/or progress of clinical informatics department initiatives.

Monitors system performance and reports when anomalies, errors, inaccuracies, or inefficiencies occur. Makes recommendations as needed.

Maintains knowledge of expanding technical and clinical expertise and applies new skills and knowledge to TMC situations.

Coordinates the collection and analysis of metrics that relate to the return on investment in clinical information systems. 

Performs related duties and responsibilities.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s degree is required in healthcare, business or a related field.  Master’s degree or equivalent experience in healthcare informatics preferred.  Certifications in clinical informatics/applications highly preferred

EXPERIENCE:  Four (4) years of work experience in an acute care/ambulatory setting , three (3) years of clinical informatics (additional informatics experience may substitute for clinical informatics experience) or clinical applications analyst experience, and two (2) years of project management related experience required with use of project management software highly preferred.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION:  Recommend clinicians, including Registered Nurses, maintain current state licensure preferred.  Will be required to certify in one or more Epic applications, and maintain Epic certification.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of current IT security standards, applicable privacy laws, TJC, DHS, State & Federal accreditation standards, etc.
  • Knowledge of systems analysis, workflow planning, gathering business requirements and transforming them into functional specifications.
  • Knowledge of adult learning and training methods.
  • Knowledge of hospital operations and associate technologies.
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals, procedural documentation, and healthcare guides.
  • Ability to translate technical terminology for consumption by non-technical audiences.
  • Able to negotiate with vendors and service providers.
  • Ability to map real-life clinical practices to informatics applications.
  • Ability to evaluate and implement hospital-wide informatics applications, including Epic.
  • Ability to define and describe the relationship between clinical workflows, guidelines, care plans, pathways, and decision support to improve healthcare outcomes.
  • Skilled at persuading and training clinical and medical staff to adopt new workflows and tools, requiring strong knowledge of change management.
