SUMMARY:
Supervises both the operational and technical aspects of the Laboratory. Provides daily direction to employees who are operating equipment. Provides insight into capital acquisitions and trouble shoots equipment and processing issues. Supervises and maintains the staffing schedules and on-call schedules. Provides insight into student evaluations and employee performance evaluations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs supervisory functions; prepares work schedules, assigns staff, observes and reviews performance to provide input to formal evaluations, and makes recommendations for personnel actions; assists in staff selection and provides orientation, training and ongoing in-services for staff.
Demonstrates and upholds established standards of behavior, safety, and confidentiality, as well as TMCH and department policies and standards.
Adheres to and supports staff in exhibiting TMCH values of integrity, community, compassion, and dedication.
Exhibits excellence in customer service through appropriate attitude and interaction with all patients, visitors and staff.
Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
Monitors and controls expenses within approved budget allocations.
Monitors the technical competence of all personnel working in the department through appropriate training, reviews of results and quality control checks.
Observes techniques of and services rendered by staff to ensure adherence to hospital guidelines.
Implements, maintains, evaluates and ensures adherence to the quality control program within the section.
Reviews technical procedures in use and modifies, researches and implements new and/or revised procedures or equipment for the sections in consultation with management and pathology staff; ensures that policies/procedures conform to requirements of accrediting agencies.
Directs the purchase/requisition of laboratory supplies and equipment by evaluating quality, cost and service to select the most desirable vendors.
Evaluates, justifies, installs and maintains equipment within the department.
Performs operation, maintenance, quality control and troubleshooting of equipment and reagent systems with appropriate documentation and follow up as necessary.
Recognizes abnormal or unusual test results and determines proper course of action prior to reporting results; consults with Pathologist regarding difficult analyses or abnormal findings when appropriate.
Prepares department for CAP (College American Pathologists) and other inspections.
May perform the essential functions of subordinates within the Laboratory.
Fulfills the duties of Technical Supervisor as detailed by CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Personnel Requirements).
Uses appropriate safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of bio-hazardous, infectious, radioactive and toxic substances.
Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in lab sciences or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years of related experience, preferably in an acute care setting and in a lead or supervisory role in high complexity microbiology with six (6) months in an appropriate sub-specialty.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: Medical Technologist (MT-ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or Medical Laboratory Lab Technician (MLT-ASCP), registered or registry-eligible by a national certifying organization.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of laboratory best practices and regulations for assigned area.
- Skill in supervising, guiding and training staff and making recommendations for improvement.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to listen and accurately interpret others' communication or instructions to take appropriate action.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
